Hand sanitizer is an antibacterial liquid, gels or foam typically used to kill most of the microorganisms/virus/bacteria on the human hand. In most establishments, hand sanitizer is usually preferred to washing hands before touching food or other surfaces. There are different types of hand sanitizer available in the market but remember to choose those that are safe for the hands according to your health provider. Hand sanitizer kills bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microorganisms such as Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Shigella (or flu), hepatitis virus, HIV, and hepatitis B virus. The key to effective hand sanitizer usage is proper hand washing, prevention of contact with the hands of others and routine hand cleanings.
To sterilize the hands using hand sanitizer, pour some onto a clean surface. When you see a foam or gel, this indicates that the product is about to foam or gel. For better absorption, mix it with warm water first. Let the solution rest for at least 20 seconds before rinsing with clean water. You can also use it as a natural sanitizer for your hands together with the regular hand washing before touching food to keep the food from being contaminated with germs.
Another alternative to alcohol hand sanitizer is using an essential oil. The best natural alternative is pure essential oils which have been diluted with carrier oils such as almond oil or coconut oil to bring out the essential oils' full power. Put a few drops of the essential oil on a cotton ball and then dip it into the alcohol solution. The amount of alcohol used should be limited based on how often you will be using the product. Use enough alcohol to completely dry the skin but not more than a third of the concentration level recommended by the manufacturer.
If possible, try not to use the alcohol based hand sanitizer or any product containing alcohol because these have the potential to irritate the eyes and the skin. However, if you have to use alcohol or a hand sanitizer with alcohol or benzoyl peroxide, then you should do it carefully. First rinse your hands thoroughly under hot water and then pat them dry with a towel. Next, thoroughly rinse your hands with the alcohol wash. For the last step, let the solution stand for at least 20 minutes to soak up all the dirt. When you finish, apply the aloe vera gel on the cleaned areas.
Using a hand sanitizer with less than twenty percent alcohol or a hand sanitizer containing non-carboline alcohol or a mixture of both alcohols may also help prevent outbreaks of thrush. Although it is true that bacteria can grow in some people and sometimes, prevention is still better than cure, these products do not eliminate all strains of bacteria in your body. They are more of a preventive measure and less of a treatment. In addition, these products should be used occasionally instead of every time you have an infection to ensure that you are not always swimming in bacteria.
One thing to note is that after using a hand sanitizer containing alcohol for the first time, you should still follow proper sanitary procedure for washing your hands especially if you have just washed them. You need to make sure that all the soap or detergent has been fully removed from your hands before you begin to wash them again. This will prevent you from transferring the bacteria from one area to another in your arms or any other part of your body. However, if you have used an alcohol-based product and you feel that your symptoms have gone away, you may repeat the treatment with an alternative alcohol-free solution. This article only intends to give you information regarding the widespread problem regarding the dangers of using hand sanitizer containing alcohol; therefore, if you have an infection, seek medical help right away.
